Launching your first website? Start with these 7 things.
Your first website doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to be clear, fast, and easy to find. Here's what actually matters.
Maybe you've been running your business off a Facebook page and word of mouth. Maybe you're turning a side hustle into something real. Either way, a website is the place customers go to decide whether to trust you, and your first one is a big step.
It's also easy to overthink. Here are the seven things that matter most for a first website, in the order I'd tackle them.
1. A domain name you own
Your domain is your address online, like yourbusiness.com. Keep it short, easy to spell, and easy to say out loud. Register it in your own name and keep the login somewhere safe. If someone else registers it for you, make sure you're listed as the owner.
2. A professional email address
you@yourbusiness.com instantly looks more established than a free email account, and it tells customers your business is real. Set it up when you get your domain so it's on your cards and invoices from day one.
3. The right few pages, not a dozen
Most small businesses launch strong with just a handful of pages:
- Home: what you do, who it's for, and how to get in touch.
- Services: what you offer, in plain language.
- About: the people behind the business. Customers want to know who they're hiring.
- Contact: phone, email, a simple form, and your service area or hours.
You can always add more later. A clear four-page site beats a cluttered twelve-page one.
4. A design that works on phones first
Most people will see your site on their phone, often while they're out and about. Your phone number should be tappable, buttons should be easy to hit, and pages should load fast even on a weak signal.
5. One clear next step
What do you want visitors to do? Call you? Book a consultation? Request a quote? Pick one main action and make it obvious on every page. When people have to hunt for how to reach you, many of them won't.
6. The basics that help you get found
Search engine optimization (SEO) sounds intimidating, but the foundation is simple: a clear title and description on each page, words your customers actually search for, fast load times, and descriptions on your images. Then claim your free Google Business Profile and link it to your site. For local businesses, that profile is often how new customers find you first.
7. A plan for after launch
Launch day is the beginning, not the end. Hours change, services grow, and websites need regular updates and backups to stay healthy and secure. Decide upfront whether you'll handle that yourself or have someone on call.

You don't have to figure it out alone
If this list feels like a lot, that's completely normal. That's exactly what the free consultation is for. We'll talk through your business, your goals, and what your first site needs to do, then I'll take it from there.
